Setup guide · 5 minutes, one time
Connect your inbox to eTracer
eTracer never logs into your email. Instead, you set up a one-time Gmail filter that automatically forwards Interac e-Transfer notifications to your private eTracer address. Five minutes now — then you never think about it again.
Interac emails youYour Gmail filter forwards iteTracer verifies it’s really InteracInvoice matched ✓
ⓘ
Before you start
Have your private eTracer address ready — it’s shown in the onboarding wizard (Settings → E-transfer forwarding, any time after). It looks like u_7f3k9q2w@in.etracer.ca and there’s a Copy button beside it. Treat it like a password.
Part 1 — Tell Gmail where to forward (one-time)
1
Open Gmail’s settings
Click the gear icon in the top-right of Gmail, then “See all settings.”
2
Go to “Forwarding and POP/IMAP”
It’s a tab along the top. Click “Add a forwarding address.”
3
Paste your eTracer address
Paste the address you copied from the wizard and click Next → Proceed.
4
Verify — from inside eTracer
Gmail wants proof the address is really yours.
Gmail now sends a verification to your eTracer address — so it lands with us, not you. Go back to your eTracer tab: the wizard shows a “Verify forwarding” button the moment it arrives. Click it, then return to Gmail.
5
Leave global forwarding OFF
Back in Gmail, keep “Disable forwarding” selected. You are not forwarding all your mail — the filter you create next forwards only Interac notifications.
Part 2 — Create the filter
1
Go to “Filters and Blocked Addresses”
Same settings page, different tab. Click “Create a new filter.”
2
Filter on Interac’s address
In the From field type exactly: payments.interac.ca — then click “Create filter.”
3
Choose “Forward it to” → your eTracer address
Tick the “Forward it to” box and pick the address you verified in Part 1.
4
Done — test it
Send yourself a $1 e-transfer, or just wait for the next real payment. It shows up in your eTracer queue within moments, marked “Verified · Interac signature.”
⚠
The one mistake to avoid: don’t forward emails manually
Clicking Fwd: on an email creates a brand-new message — Interac’s tamper-proof signature doesn’t survive, so eTracer can’t verify it and will (correctly) reject it. Only the filter forwards the original email intact. Set the filter once and every payment verifies automatically.
✓
Why this is safer than “connecting” your inbox
eTracer never has any access to your mailbox — no password, no OAuth login, no reading rights. It only ever receives the specific emails your filter sends it, and it cryptographically checks each one against Interac’s own signature (payments.interac.ca) before a single dollar is matched. If a forwarded email can’t be proven authentic, it’s quarantined and nothing touches your books.
Using Outlook or Microsoft 365?
Same idea, called a rule:
- Settings → Mail → Rules → “Add new rule”
- Condition: From · payments.interac.ca
- Action: “Redirect to” (use Redirect, not Forward — Redirect resends the original message intact) → your eTracer address
ⓘ
On Google Workspace at work?
Some Workspace admins disable auto-forwarding by default. If Gmail won’t let you add a forwarding address, your admin can allow it in Admin console → Apps → Gmail → End User Access → “Automatic forwarding.” It only ever applies to the filter you create.
Troubleshooting
eTracer says “can’t verify — manual forward”
You forwarded the email yourself with the Fwd: button. Nothing was booked and nothing is lost — set up the filter above, and the next payment verifies on its own. There’s no need to re-send anything.
Payments aren’t showing up at all
Three things to check, in order: 1) Part 1 verification was completed (the wizard shows “Forwarding confirmed ✓”). 2) The filter’s From field is exactly payments.interac.ca — no typos, nothing else. 3) The e-transfer notification actually arrives at this mailbox (check your inbox for the Interac email itself).
I have several inboxes that receive e-transfers
Repeat this setup in each mailbox — they can all forward to the same eTracer address. In eTracer, the queue and ledger show which mailbox each payment came through.
Can eTracer see my other email?
No. Forwarding is one-directional and filtered: eTracer receives only what your filter matches — Interac payment notifications — and nothing else, ever.
Five minutes, once. Then every e-transfer matches itself.
The wizard walks you through this exact setup — with your address ready to copy.
